Talk on Thurs 23rd Nov 2017 6pm Spike Print Studio
How does an editioned print come into being? In May 2016 Emma Stibbon was AIR at Volcano National Park, Hawai’i, where she lived on the rim of one of the world’s most active volcanoes. In this talk she will speak about her experience of this dynamic landscape and how it informed her making of the woodcut ‘Caldera Overlook’, her largest work to date. Focusing on the lush rainforest, the woodcut depicts the crater’s glow and serves as a reminder that despite the volcano’s destructive power there is renewal.
The editioning of this monumental woodcut, measuring 214 x 372 cm was undertaken at Spike Print Studio with editioner Amy-Jane Blackhall from INK on PAPER PRESS, and Lisa Takahashi as print assistant. Amy-Jane and Lisa will discuss the challenges and solutions they met editioning such a large-scale work. ‘Caldera Overlook’ will be on display in the studio for the talk.
