Contemporary Art course sessions

The exploring contemporary art course is going well, partly because the group has a real mix of people in it and we are able to have good discussions. The content of the sessions looks something like this:

First session

Looking at some key images from different ‘isms’ of the last 100 years. This establishes the same starting point for the group. The final set of images will look at a few contemporary artists who are good examples of both conceptual practice and those that work with the body.

Second session

We will look at how to ask (the right) questions of artwork (practical exercise). Then to explore language, context and meaning. Looking at Francis Bacon and the different ‘readings’ of his work by writers and critics. Finally Louise Bourgeois.

Third session

Looking at art business – via periodicals – then we will look at feminism in some detail as an ‘ism’ – (Cindy Sherman) and the Real, Claude Cahun, Mary Kelly, Sophie Calle. Through this we can discuss French philosophy and some art theorists. Installation: the role of the museum/gallery space
