The one year Contemporary Relief Printing course is packed full of ideas on creating multi-coloured linocuts, textile prints and wood engravings. During the first term you will learn the basic techniques of designing, cutting and printing using our traditional printing presses. Using your own designs you can print your own cushion cover, notebooks and collages. Your imagination will be stretched!
This course will explore one of the oldest forms of printmaking, and how it can be used in contemporary practice to produce powerful and striking images.
Two professional artists specialising in Relief Print will take you through these processes with friendly advice and encourage an experimental approach.
In the second term, at Intermediate Level, we will extend your printing skills into wood cutting using plywood, further tuition in the art of wood engraving and lino cutting. You will experience how to set and print text with a typographer. You will gain experience of inking techniques and confidence in using the studio.
For your final term project you will combine two of these mediums to create your own contemporary artworks. We hope to expand your ideas of contemporary print. You will be supported by expert tuition and your chosen work will be exhibited in an art gallery in Bristol.
You will experiment with this wonderful, traditional method of printmaking using both a press and your hands to produce a series of printed works. You will also be encouraged to look at contemporary artists who use relief, to extend your own visual printmaking vocabulary.
No matter what your current ability for relief printing Lino and wood cut, this course will be able to provide excellent starting points for beginners and improvement methods for those who have already got some experience and plenty of food for thought to take away. From expressive mark making to contemporary block printing – this course will open your mind to the beautiful world of relief printing.
