Get Inky Without Chemicals | An introduction to Drypoint Etching, Collagraph, and Monoprint
This is a hands-on course exploring etching and intaglio techniques without the use of chemicals. Designed to be practical, accessible, and gloriously inky, this course focuses on safe, sustainable approaches to printmaking while preserving the rich tonal qualities that intaglio is known for.
Working with experienced tutors and printmakers Jemma Gunning and George Hounsome, you’ll explore a wide range of non-toxic techniques including drypoint, collagraph, monoprint, and recycled material printing such as Tetra Pak plates.
You’ll learn how to prepare plates, understand and use specialist tools and materials, develop mark-making techniques, and translate drawings, photographs, and found source material into printed images.
The course covers the full printmaking process: inking, wiping, and printing on an etching press, with plenty of time for experimentation and individual guidance. Emphasis is placed on process, play, and discovery, making this an ideal environment to build confidence and technical understanding.
Perfect for beginners or those looking to refresh their practice, this course acts as a mini foundation in intaglio printmaking, offering a broad introduction to multiple techniques and approaches — all without hazardous chemicals.
Jemma is a well established printmaker in Bristol who uses etching and monoprinting to capture the 'quiet beauty in places shaped by human and environmental forces'.
George leads our highly successful Year course in Illustration. She specialises in Collagraph techniques and has expensive experience teaching in Higher Eduction.
