NEW for 2026. Immerse yourself in the fascinating art of wood engraving with contemporary and respected artist Ben Goodman.
What to Expect
Wood engraving is a wonderfully low-tech printmaking discipline which requires little more than a set of tools and a piece of wood – yet it can produce the most beautiful and intricate images.
This comprehensive, hands on workshop will teach you everything you need to know about wood engraving:
- Preparing blocks and transferring designs.
- Historical and contemporary examples.
- Handling tools
- Exploring mark making and techniques for tone, texture, depth, and line quality
- Printing by hand and with a press
- Editioning and presenting prints
- Demonstrations and individual guidance
- Optional advanced techniques, such as make-ready and reduction engraving
All materials will be provided for you. However you may wish to bring strong reading glasses or a magnifying glass
Who is it for?
This course is suitable for allabilities, from complete beginners to established artists wanting to learn new techniques. Throughout the course Ben will guide each student based on their existing experience and abilities.
About Ben Goodman
British artist and printmaker, Ben Goodman, is best known for his use of traditional wood engraving to create intricate and powerful portraits.
His work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally, and his prints are held in various National Collections, including the V&A (UK), MMU (UK), CAFA (China) and HMP (China). He is the youngest of his generation to become an elected member of The Society of Wood Engravers, and was awarded the prestigious Rachel Reckitt Prize in 2023 and 2025.
He is a Senior Technician at UWE (Bristol) where he teaches engraving and relief printmaking.
